In January 2026, the first episode of our podcast series "Mensch im Blick. Ein Info-Podcast zu Aspekten von Geschlecht und Gender in der Forschung"?de went online. Jana George and Falk Bornmüller invited Prof Oliver Werz from the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, who is researching gender-specific inflammatory processes in the human body at the University of Jena.

In the second episode, the two learn from Prof Melanie Weirich and Prof Adrian Simpson (Speech Studies and Phonetics) how differently people can speak and why this is not just to do with biological sex.

Workshop "Safe Spaces in Mathematics Education"

Podcast-Recording with Julchen Brieger (mid)

On 28 January 2026, the workshop on Queer Spaces in Mathematics ("Exploring queer perspectives on learning and professional trajectories"), led by Dr Julchen Brieger (Chemnitz University of Technology), addressed the classification of developments in the history of mathematics through the lens of gender-sensitive research on the one hand and the creation of safe spaces in mathematics teaching on the other.

Dr Julchen Brieger first presented basic definitions of sex and gender and then focused on the concept of "doing gender" based on West and Zimmermann. Examples from pop culture and public life, such as Harry Styles and Kamela Harris, helped the participants to understand concepts such as intersectionality, i.e. the overlapping of different experiences of discrimination. They were also able to understand their own privileges using the "Wheel of Power". Finally, the learning experiences of anonymised participants from Dr Brieger's study were examined for hidden privileges or experiences of discrimination using a drawing task and worked on in groups. It became clear how important group dynamics are for learning experiences and how much teachers can influence the careers of queer people in Mathematics in particular by creating safe spaces while they are still at school.

Following her workshop, Julchen Brieger was a guest in the podcast studio for the series "Mensch im Blick", where she reported in detail on her research focus on queer people in Mathematics.
