Erasmus+ scholarships for selected exchange universities worldwide

Similar to the Erasmus+ programme within Europe, Friedrich Schiller University offers the Erasmus+ ICM programme (¡®Å·ÖÞ±­Í¶×¢µØÖ·_Ã÷ÉýÌåÓý-¾º²Ê×ãÇò±È·ÖÍÆ¼ö Credit Mobility¡¯/Key Action 171) for exchanges with selected partner universities. This gives students, doctoral candidates, postdocs and staff at the University of Jena the opportunity to participate in exchanges outside the EU. The partner countries in this programme currently include:

Please note: In all countries marked with (*), only doctoral students and teaching staff are permitted to participate in the Erasmus ICM programme.?

A list of possible partner universities can be found below. The current call for applications (exchange at BA and MA level) is also available for download. This programme is coordinated by the Å·ÖÞ±­Í¶×¢µØÖ·_Ã÷ÉýÌåÓý-¾º²Ê×ãÇò±È·ÖÍÆ¼ö Office in consultation with the Graduate Academy and the departments.

In contrast to bilateral exchange programmes, not only will you be exempt from tuition fees at the host university during your stay abroad, but you will also receive a partial scholarship of €700 per month and a one-time travel allowance.?

  • Duration and amount of the scholarship

    The partial scholarship for long-term stays (2-4 months of funding) includes:

    • A monthly scholarship allowance of EUR 700 per month (outgoing); EUR 850 or EUR 900 (incoming)
    • A one-off travel allowance (according to the European Commission's distance calculatorExternal link). The exact rate depends on the project cycle from which you are receiving funding: see funding ratesExternal link.
    • If applicable, a monthly top-up for students with limited opportunities in the amount of EUR 250 (see declaration of honour under ¡®Downloads¡¯ and the ¡®Additional funding¡¯ tab [incoming students from countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Ukraine receive this top-up automatically]).

    Tuition fees at the host university abroad are waived under the Erasmus+ ICM programme. However, social fees or fees comparable to the semester contribution may apply.?


  • Additional funding

    Erasmus promotes sustainability, equal opportunities and inclusion. For this reason, students with fewer opportunities can receive additional funding.

    1. Additional subsidy for sustainable travel (Green Travel)

    ¡®Green Travel¡¯ is defined as travel in which the following modes of transport are used for the majority of the journey (at least 50% of the distance):

    • Bicycle
    • Bus
    • Carpooling
    • Train
    • other sustainable modes of transport (e.g. walking)

    If this applies to you, you will receive the ¡®Green Travel¡¯ travel allowance instead of the regular travel allowance.

    Exceptional costsExternal link for expensive travel can be requested if the increased travel cost support does not cover at least 70% of the actual costs.

    2. Additional funding for participants with fewer opportunities

    Participating students who meet at least one of the eligibility criteria described below can receive additional funding of EUR 250 per month for social participation (top-up ¡®fewer opportunities¡¯):

    • Working students: The employment must have been exercised for at least 6 months prior to the stay abroad. The monthly income during the minimum period is above EUR 450 and below EUR 850 net. The employment in Germany is not continued during the stay abroad, not even through mobile working. Termination is not a prerequisite; the employment contract can also be paused.
    • First-generation academics (students from non-academic families): neither parent nor guardian has a degree from a university, college, technical college or vocational academy in Germany or abroad.?
    • Students with children: at least one of their own children will accompany them during their entire stay abroad. Funding is also possible if their partner accompanies them.
    • Students with chronic illnesses: they have a chronic illness that causes additional financial needs while abroad.
    • Students with disabilities: the student has a disability with a degree of disability of 20 or more.

    Participants with disabilities or chronic illnesses, as well as participants with children, can also claim actual costsExternal link. This requires an application to the DAAD National Agency. Students in the target group have the opportunity to apply for a subsidy of up to €15,000 per semester to cover the actual additional costs of mobility abroad.

  • Requirements and duration
    • enrolment in a full-time degree programme at the University of Jena
    • English language skills at C1 level, in some cases B2 level, and/or knowledge of the local language
    • at least 2nd semester (bachelor's degree) at the time of application

    Note: Foreign students cannot participate in exchange programmes in their home country!

    Duration of funding: usually 3 or 4 full months (max. 12 months within a study cycle)

    By 30 November 2025 (USA/Canada) or 15 January 2026 (other countries) for the 2026/2027 winter semester or 2027 summer semester.

  • Selection criteria

    The Å·ÖÞ±­Í¶×¢µØÖ·_Ã÷ÉýÌåÓý-¾º²Ê×ãÇò±È·ÖÍÆ¼ö Office applies various criteria when evaluating your application:

    • academic performance (A-level grades, Friedolin transcript, final grade from previous studies, if applicable)
    • motivation (preparation for the project: establishing contact, intercultural preparation, etc.; reasons for studying abroad: benefits; choice of host institution)
    • meaningfulness of the project/relevance (study goals: relevance to studies, career prospects, integration into the course of study, suitability)
    • letter of recommendation (academic assessment, recommendation)
    • language skills (skills required for the stay abroad and additional skills)
    • extra-curricular experience/engagement at the university (subject-related internships and jobs; social and voluntary work; involvement in university politics; work as an assistant or student mentor)
    • Field of study (priority is given to subjects listed in the current ICM call for applications for the respective partner university)

    Use of Third-Party Providers:
    The University of Jena utilizes the "MoveON" database from QS UniSolution GmbH, Meitnerstr. 10, 70563 Stuttgart, as a data processor in accordance with Art. 28 GDPR. Any further transfer of personal data to third parties will only occur after prior approval by the European Commission, as outlined in the Erasmus+ program guidelines.     5. Data Retention Period

    Personal data collected as part of the Erasmus+ program will be stored for a period of ten years after the completion of your stay abroad and will then be deleted. This follows the European Commission¡¯s requirements for retaining Erasmus+ participant data and Thuringian budgetary law.

    6. Your Rights as a Data Subject

    Under the GDPR, you have the following rights:

    • The right to access your stored personal data (Art. 15 GDPR).
    • The right to correct incorrect data (Art. 16 GDPR).
    • The right to erasure or restriction of your data processing, provided the legal requirements are met (Art. 17, 18 GDPR).

    5. Data Retention Period

    Personal data collected as part of the Erasmus+ program will be stored for a period of ten years after the completion of your stay abroad and will then be deleted. This follows the European Commission¡¯s requirements for retaining Erasmus+ participant data and Thuringian budgetary law.
