Science thrives on exchange. When researchers from different disciplines enter into dialogue with each other, new perspectives and fresh research ideas emerge. In order to visibly strengthen this exchange in Jena, the Carl Zeiss Foundation is enabling the construction of a unique communication and meeting centre at its founding location: the FORUM. With funding totalling 20 million euros, one of the foundation's largest single grants to the Friedrich Schiller University, a place that unites science in all its facets will be created between 2025 and 2027.
Located in the heart of the city, the FORUM offers curated events, interdisciplinary co-working, a modern conference area and flats for international guests. It primarily connects researchers across disciplines and faculties and at the same time creates spaces for dialogue between science and society in selected programmes. As an expression of a "Fourth Generation University", the FORUM stands for an institution of higher education that consciously shapes its knowledge production in dialogue with society. Research, teaching and transfer are intertwined here - and encounters become a source of new ideas. In this way, the FORUM becomes the lively centre of the new campus between Inselplatz and the University Main Building and invites everyone to shape the future together.
Co-determined: sustainable, lively, open
With its transparent architecture, spacious communal areas and integrated catering facilities, the FORUM fulfils the widely expressed desire for an interdisciplinary place for scientific networking and creative exchange. Suggestions from the university community are also incorporated into the design of a sustainable and health-promoting working environment: The roof terrace, greenery, benches, bicycle stands and the use of natural materials ensure a high quality of stay.
