Based on a seminar paper by a group of students from the GEOG535 seminar (SoSe2024), which looked for potential locations for urban gardening at the University of Jena, the idea was born to establish a student urban gardening project in Schiller's garden. Here, the seminar group identified vacant beds and made initial arrangements with garden manager Helmut Hühn. This project was taken up during the Climate Challenge and actively launched by the Green Office.
The project is currently run by 14 university students, together with the university gardener who looks after the university's historic gardens (Robert) and a student employee from the Green Office (Frederik). Communication between the students takes place via WhatsApp.
The following vegetables are currently being planted: zucchini, bell pepper, cucumber, leek, tomato, garlic, radish, lettuce, pumpkin, potato, beet, chard, carrot, kohlrabi. We have eight to twelve 1m*4.5m beds in the park of Schiller's garden house at our disposal.
With this project, we are committed to sustainable, communal gardening in the city and at the university. Furthermore, knowledge can be shared and exchanged here, especially on the topics of gardening, the environment and nutrition. The city garden project is a green meeting place for everyone.
New participants in the project are always welcome!
There are also plans to cooperate with the student health management team on this project in the future. They have rented a plot of land in the Flussland, where you can also try out a sustainable and healthy lifestyle.?Urban Gardening FlusslandExternal link
