The EC2U Virtual Institute for Quality Education – Modern Languages (VIQUE-MLExternal link) connects researchers across Europe to explore multilingualism, cultural diversity, and sustainable education practices.
As part of the VIQUE-ML, the University of Jena is awarding eight twelve-day research grants for doctoral candidates in the humanities, linguistics and cultural studies to undertake a stay at one of the following EC2U partner universities:

Eligibility
? You are a PhD student in the fields of humanities, linguistics, literary studies or cultural studies at the University of Jena
? You are planning a twelve-day research visit to one of the above-mentioned universities, to be completed by 31 July 2027 at the latest
? You are already in contact with a subject supervisor at the host university (not strictly required, see below).
? If you do not yet have any contacts at the relevant university, a local academic supervisor can also be arranged as part of a matchmaking process. To arrange this, please contact Dr Thomas Schmidtgall (thomas.schmidtgall@uni-jena.de) BEFORE submitting your application.
EC2U Grant
The EC2U grant covers travel expenses for up to eight doctoral students for a period of twelve days each, up to a maximum of 1,547 EUR each.
Application
Applications should be submitted by 15 June 2026 to ec2u@uni-jena.de? and must include the following documents:
? Curriculum vitae
? A maximum of one A4 page abstract of the PhD project
? A maximum of two A4 pages covering the motivation letter, which, in addition to general motivation, should outline the general objectives of the stay and – if already known – name the local supervisor
