C2U Climate Walk as part of European Week 2026
Welcome to the Climate Walk, a guided tour of the city of Jena that offers insights into the urban climate and adaptation strategies. Understanding the urban climate is of crucial importance, as the world’s population is estimated to reach 11 billion by the year 2100, with more than half living in urban areas. This rapid urbanisation is leading to local changes in land cover and energy balance, resulting in a unique urban climate. Heat-related deaths are becoming an increasing cause for concern. Last year, 15,000 deaths were reported in Europe.
Cities, including Jena, are more vulnerable to heatwaves, which have a negative impact on public health. Jena faces the challenge of adapting to climate change whilst meeting the growing demand for housing. The limited space in the valley requires careful urban planning and innovative solutions to ensure a sustainable future for its residents.
The project is part of the European University Alliance EC2UExternal link, especially the Virtual Institite for Sustainable Cities and CommunitiesExternal link. Daniel Knopf, Jena’s?Climate Adaptation CoordinatorExternal link, supported the Climate Walk with his valuable expertise.?
