The German Research Foundation (DFG) operates the Chinese-German Center for Science PromotionExternal link (CDZ) in Beijing together with its Chinese partner organization, the National Natural Science Foundation of ChinaExternal link (NSFC). The main tasks of the CDZ are to organize strategic events on science policy topics, promote networking between scientists in Germany and China, and inform the community about funding opportunities offered by the DFG and the NSFC.

With the aim of strengthening expertise on China and connecting researchers in the early stages of their postdoctoral careers, the CDZ is organizing a 10-day trip to leading research institutions in China from late October to early November 2026.

The program is aimed at postdoctoral researchers at German research institutions in the fields of physics and chemistry who are interested in learning about the Chinese science system and its key players. No prior knowledge or Chinese language skills are required. Various event formats are planned, such as laboratory visits, workshops, matchmaking sessions, and conference participation.

Visits to the following institutions are planned; there will be opportunities for professional exchange with colleagues and working groups on site:

  • Shanghai: Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University
  • Beijing: Tsinghua University, Beijing University
  • Hefei: University of Science and Technology of China, Institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
  • Shenzhen: Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Another item on the itinerary is participation in the World Laureates Forum in Lingang near Shanghai, which offers the opportunity to exchange ideas with Nobel Prize winners and other highly renowned international scientists. A preparatory workshop on the objectives and framework conditions is mandatory prior to the trip.

The program is financed by the CDZ. Flight costs (economy class), domestic travel within China to the various institutions participating in the program, as well as hotel accommodation and meals are covered in accordance with federal travel expense regulations.

The group will be accompanied by staff from the CDZ, the NSFC, and the DFG.
