Dr Stephan Ortmann is Associate Professor of Political Science at the Hong Kong Metropolitan University. His research focuses on authoritarian regimes, democratisation processes, and political developments in East Asia, particularly in Hong Kong and Singapore.
In April 2025, he published a book co-authored with Kwun-Sun Lau and Ka-Lok Chan on the political changes in Hong Kong following the introduction of the National Security Law. Building on this monograph, his lecture examines how the law has profoundly shaped Hong Kong’s political structures, public discourse, and civil society.
The lecture will last approximately 45 to 60 minutes, followed by a discussion and an opportunity to ask questions.
