Photonic chips are emerging as a key frontier in the global semiconductor race — redefining innovation pathways, value chains, and standardization mechanisms that will determine future technological leadership. This seminar at the Abbe Center of Photonics investigates how geopolitical shifts and innovation policies influence research priorities, industrial strategies, and technological sovereignty.Special attention will be given to China’s increasing role and strategic interest in photonic technologies — including selected case studies and anecdotes illustrating its industrial mobilization, innovation power and standard-setting ambitions. The session further explores risk scenarios, strategic positioning, and implications for Germany’s innovation capacity within this evolving global landscape.
