Arriving in Jena was at first shocking because it is so much smaller than the city I come from (Mexico City), and has less people, less loud city noises and more relaxed vibes. At the beginning it was hard getting used to not being in a rush whenever I left my dorm. I learned how to have slower days and enjoy the moment. If I am being completely honest, at first it was boring being in a city this small but after a few weeks I discovered that it has a lot more things to offer than I first thought.

One of my favorite weekly activities was going every Wednesday with my friend to Café 欧洲杯投注地址_明升体育-竞彩足球比分推荐Externer Link at Haus auf der MauerExterner Link. There, you can learn about different cultures with the presentations given by different volunteers every week. Once the presentation is over you can have a little snack and make new friends. I had the opportunity to talk about Mexico and the Day of the Dead, and enjoyed every second of it. Usually, after Café 欧洲杯投注地址_明升体育-竞彩足球比分推荐 we went to the Irish Pub to hang for a bit more. This became a routine and felt like a safe space to be myself and enjoy being an international student.

In addition, I would dare say that Jena is a foreigner-friendly place for international students. The people are kind and if you do not speak German you will not have much trouble trying to communicate with others. When I first arrived I was afraid that my level of German would not be good enough or that they would not understand what I was saying because of my accent, however that fear disappeared quickly after a few attempts of speaking it wherever I went.

Here, I experienced my first Christmas market and it became a core memory for me. All the things that I saw on movies about Christmas in Europe suddenly came to life in front of my eyes. Also, thanks to the DeutschlandticketExterner Link I had the opportunity to visit different Christmas markets all over Germany with friends, and it became my favorite weekend activity during november-december. Having a Glühwein while walking through the market, eating new food and enjoying the company of my friends definitely made the Christmas season more magical.

Talking about the education system, I find that in Germany it is harder than in Mexico. Here your grades depend only on an exam, and even though you have a second chance to retake the exam in case you did not get a good grade, it puts a lot of pressure on. During the exam period the librariesExterner Link are crazy busy and you see everyone stressing out. I think feeling all that pressure helped me procrastinate less and study more in order to pass my exams.?

My favorite parts of all this experience were all the friends I made along the way and all the places I visited; places I never imagined I would visit at this point of my life or even the ones I did not know existed. Jena will always have a special place in my heart.
